Let me ask you a very blunt question! How well do you know yourself? How comfortable are you talking about who you are? Who you really are.
A personal brand business is all about you. Your expertise, your style, personality and ultimately, what you want to be known for. But how do you figure all that out, exactly?
Putting your true self out there
In this post, I'll be sharing a very simple exercise that’ll help you do just that – but, first let’s get real for a minute.
You shouldn’t be feeling awkward about doing this. In today’s world, people want to do business more other people more so than ever before. We crave personal relationships with those that we surround ourselves with and that includes those that we follow and learn from.
Remember, your vibe will attract your tribe. So, being yourself and putting yourself out there is all part of the deal when it comes to building a future-proof business. With that being said, here’s that exercise I promised that’ll help you figure this out, and define who you really are!
Taking the Self Awareness Test
It’s called the Self Awareness Test, and it goes like this: grab a piece of paper, and draw a line down the middle of it. Them on the left hand side write down all the things you feel you’re really good at, all the things that come to mind when those that know you think about, when your name pops up in conversation. Now think about your hidden qualities. What are your soft skills?
What are your values? What do you really care about? What do people notice about you when they meet you for the first time? What makes you different? I’m a big believer that being different is BETTER than just being better. This list is usually quite easy for more people to put together, because, let’s face it, we like to flatter ourselves, don’t we?
Then, on the other side of the paper, jot down all the things you’re not so good at. The things you struggle with. That’s our ‘keep it real’ list. The point of this is to gain clarity for our message to the world AND to our prospective customers! You’ll find that by doing this quick exercise you have all the clarity you need to make it abundantly clear what it is you do, and what problems you can solve for those that discover and follow you.
Marketing like a magnet
Remember, the first few times you post about your work online it can feel a bit odd. But ignore that feeling. Why? Because no-one is going to talk about how great you are with as much conviction as you are! You have to stand up and show your expertise yourself. You’ve got to put yourself out there.
Chances are, you’re not going to please everyone. And that’s fine. We don’t WANT to please everyone. But the more ‘you’ you put into your work and message, the more you’ll attract those that get you and what you stand for. And that’s where the magic happens.
That’s how you define who you really are.
